Questions: Fundamentals/Hajj

1) Can you go to pilgrimage when you owe a mortgage on your house?

Briefly:

2) Asalaamu- Alaikum. I have a two part question concerning zabeeha for Eidul-Adha: a.) Would the slaughter of a sheep by a muslim male who is the head of a family be considered zabeeha for the entire family?

Waalaikum us-salaam. Yes, as clear from the hadith.

b. Would the share in the slaughter of a cow be sufficient to fulfill the obligation of zabeeha for entire family?

Yes. Detailed answers of both and other questions are in our article on Sacrifice that appeared in HUDAA last year. This will also be a part of owr book on Eeds to be published soon.

A brother told me that according to Imam Malik (rahimahullah) (I think he meant the Maliki mathaab, not actually Imam Malik), that it is better to slaughter yourself rather than partake in a share.

True - from the practice of the Prophet. But the share is acceptable as well.

3) Is there any reward for when planning to go to umra, to visit Medina. Also is 'Ziyaarah' (visiting famous sites in Mecca & Medina) permissible

Yes, because the Prophet () said that travel may be made to his masjid, and indicated that the prayers in it are multiplied 1000 times. Ziyaarah may be specifically made to that masjid, but nothing is wrong in visiting other places while there.

4) Regarding Hajj At-Tamattu', how much hair does a woman have to cut off for 'umrah?

There is no text specifying that -- except to say that she may not shave her hair. Most of the scholars agree that all she needs to cut is a little bit (about a half inch) from the end of her hair.)

5) Inshaa'Allah I plan to go on Hajj this year. Do I need to give back people's things that i have borrowed such as books, etc.? Or do I simply put it in a will before I leave?

Simply include it in a will, or a brief letter if the items are not very significant. Wallahu a'lam.

6) There are two opinions concerning the sai' for those performing the tamattu' hajj. One opinion says that a person performing the tamittu' hajj, must perform the sai' after thawaf Ifadhah.Another opinion says that the sai' performed during thawaf qudum is sufficient and therefore there is no requirement to perform the sai' after thawaf Ifadhah. My question is: Of the two opinons which is the closest to the truth.?

Correct opinion: must perform two sa'ys: one for Umrah and one for Hajj. [Ali al-Halabi]
