Guide to Understanding An-Nawawi's 40 Hadeeth
Hadeeth # 04
On the authority of Aboo `Abd `Arafah-rahmaan `Abdullaah ibn Mas`ood
, who said: The Messenger of Allah
and he is truthful, the
believed, narrated to us:
Verily the creation of each one of you is brought together in the
mother's belly for forty days in the form of a seed, then he is a clot
of blood for a like period, then a morsel of flesh for a like period,
then there is sent to him the angel who blows the breath of life into
him and who is commanded about four matters: to write down his means
of livelihood, his life span, his actions, and whether happy or
unhappy. By Allah, other than Whom there is no diety, verily one of
you behaves like the people of Paradise until there is but an arm's
length between him and it, and that which has been written overtakes
him and so he behaves like the people of Hell-fire until there is but
an arm's length between him and it, and that which has been written
overtakes him and so he behaves like the people of Paradise and thus
he enters it.
It was narrated by al-Bukhaari and Muslim.
Explanation of Hadeeth # 04
-
That the angel of life blows life into the foetus after it is 120 days
old, so without doubt, terminating the life of a foetus when it is
over 4 months old is definitely murder.
-
That each child which is born has its livelihood, how long it will
live, whatit will do and how it will fare, recorded before birth since
Allah knows the past and the future and allows the child to be what it
will be.
-
That since life, sustenance, ability and existence is in the Hands of
Allah and taken care of by Him, one who knows this will not become
deceitful or desparate about these things, but worship Allah
constantly and patiently.
-
That the results are in the Hands of Allah and one must do what one
knows is best according to His Deen.
-
That one never knows how a person will change, either for the good or
the bad, so one should not give up trying.
-
It is permissible to say "By Allah" to emphasise something. [Sharh
Nawawi]
-
One should seek refuge with Allah from lapsing into evil. [Sharh
Nawawi]
